MoRPh Surveys and River Condition Assessment
The Modular River Physical Survey (MoRPh) is now the preferred method for conducting River Condition Assessments in the context of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). The assessment combines field survey data (MoRPh) with a desk-based ‘River Type’ classification to generate a final condition score for rivers and streams in the Defra Metric. If your project site is intersected or bordered by a watercourse, a MoRPh assessment will likely be required to establish your BNG baseline.
At Ecosphere Ecology, we have four years of experience conducting River Condition Assessments and a strong commitment to freshwater habitat restoration. With over 90% of UK rivers altered due to land use changes, we recognise the urgent need to protect and restore these dynamic ecosystems.
Our approach focuses on reinstating natural physical processes that create and sustain freshwater habitats, supporting a wide range of aquatic life, from invertebrates to riparian mammals.
With hands-on experience in practical river restoration, we ensure that our river enhancement strategies are pragmatic, achievable, and effective in delivering meaningful ecological gains.
